Trust is not an inherent variable for said subset of fiction. It would be nice, but there is that whole underbelly "Needs Strict Correction" sub-subset on the Venn that would require that the character is not to be trusted.
I believe this would involve a stack of daguerreotypes, a blind printer and an engraver with a strong constitution.
I am of the considered opinion that Airman Higgs is a little ... shall we say overblown?, in the story as it's related. I am anticipating finding in due time that he's a weaselly little panicker. (Or perhaps a covert construct, if all that has been shown is actually true ....)
Ooh, not necessarily! If the Higgs clan is a multi-generational family of sailors, airmen and soldiers for Haus Wulfenbach, it could be a genetic trait by now. “Ho, hum – there goes the ship again. I’m still five explosions behind Da, and Grandda had twelve more ships shot out from under him.”
Ah, but everyone else on Wulfenbach ships (with the exception of the Jägerkin) panics so well. Surely there are a few more "family career" airmen about ...?

I was thinking of the No-Fear Spray myself -- Higgs is just far too placid in the face of everything! (So either there's something odd at work here, or he was pretending to be James Bond as he related his version of what happened.)
