Twelfth Day of Christmas

Lupin let himself into his private study; the one Lovelace had no control within. His workstation here had no connection to the lab mainframe, and the firewall was off the shelf without any of his signature programming to give away it was his computer. True, it wasn’t Lovelace who had eventually caused the downfall of the arctic base, but the need was proven in that disastrous incident.
Charlotte was becoming a central character in his dreams in the three months she had been here. There was nothing in her actions outside acceptable workplace behaviors, so it was not her fault he dreamed of juniper forests and bright blue skies.
It might be due to her actions that Lovelace had warmed up to her, but as far as he could tell, it was solely due to interaction, not coding. She treated everyone in the lab with respect, and seemed to genuinely care what happened to everyone, even himself. He rationalized he was still investigating her background as part of the security procedures, but he disliked deluding himself. Simply put, he wanted her even if he didn’t know who she was, a clear violation of the security procedures he had written.
He sighed and switched to his personal e-mail program, deleting the confirmation of the progress report he had sent over winter break to Dr Kirby, and checked the security photos from the FAIR solstice party. She looks like her mother, he thought before he realized just who was in the photo.
