Ninth Day of Christmas

Anneka woke in the early morning to the rumbling hiss of a steam engine shutting down in the alley behind the Jäger’s Hat. Peering out the window as the wind changed direction to lift the last of the coal smoke and steam away, she saw the contraption parked in the kitchenyard. A leather clad figure was offloading what looked like heavy bundles by the back door. She quickly dressed, grabbed the mace from under the bar, and was waiting when the figure let themselves into the kitchen.

Luci blocked the blow, pulled off her driving helmet and said “Happy Christmas?”
