Well, pooh.

Since only my sister editor found Father's Day interesting, I shall retaliate with... Unnatural Ices

Doesn't that just send shivers up your spine? (C'mon, couldn't you shiver, just a little?)

Okay, to be fair, [livejournal.com profile] blueeyedtigress asked for it, after the soy debacle, and the frozen Bloody Mary recipe left her cold.

Adapted from Messrs Cohen and Greenfield, here are two of my favourites.

Beer Sorbet
18 oz dark beer (that's about 1 1/2 bottles, I trust you know what to do with the remainder)
5 T sugar (this is an approximate, depending on your taste - Guiness takes about six tablespoons)

Pour the beer and the sugar into a large mixing bowl and stir until the beer is flat and the sugar is dissolved.

Transfer the mixture to an ice cream maker and freeze according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Makes one quart

I haven't forgotten the temperance people in my list either.

Citrus Sorbet
3 lemons, chilled (or 1/2 c lemon juice) {or 4 limes = 1/2 c lime juice} [I go ahead and use the whole ruby red grapefruit, but I like grapefruit]
zest of one of the lemons or limes (or both, I like to live dangerously) [Not that fond of grapefruit zest, actually.]
1 c sugar
2 1/2 c very cold water

grate the zest from one of the fruits and set it aside.

Juice the lemons/limes/grapefruits/whathaveyou. Save the pulp but pick out the seeds and pith.

Stir the sugar and water together in a mixing bowl until the sugar dissolves. stir in the juice and the zest.

Transfer the mixture to an ice cream maker and freeze according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Makes one quart.

Of course I found it intereesting, I just didn't PTK on it. But it was used as input for my comment today on my post of 15 June, 14:31. Yes! I have suggested that term be adopted into Netspeak. Honestly I am surprised that more Fanspeak didn't cross over into Netspeak. This and other fanzine-oriented expressions apply equally well.

Problem being, I think there were different lists. Leastwise, I saw an entire sheet of acronyms recently, and the only one I recognised was LOL. They didn't have RAEBNC, nor HHOK, nor ROTFL. I'm wondering if the folks who composed it had even ever been BBS-ers or APA-hacks ....

If you grew up a Baptist in New England in the USA you'd have an entirely different concept of "apple cider" [or other ciders]; altho' this was not so in the USA before Prohibition, at the latest. Now I grok Strongbow, Hornsby's, etc. My first conscious try at English cider was, IIRC, Woodchuck. I brought the label home [might still be in a paper travel journal...].

Shoot, I can get Woodchuck (http://www.woodchuck.com/) out of Vermont and Hornsby's Hard cider (Gallo distributes it, not sure if it is produced by them) at my local grocery.

It may take some experimentation to get the sugar levels right with the cider, and my first inclination is to just try the Woodchuck straight into the ice cream freezer.

May I offer another:

LEMON AMARETTO ITALIAN ICES
from a booklet mailed out on request from Amaretto di Saronno.

2 cups water
3/4 cups sugar
Grated rind and juice of 1 lemon
1/2 cup amaretto liqueur
2 egg whites

In a saucepan, combine water and sugar. Bring mixture to a boil and boil it for 5 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in lemon rind and juice and amaretto. Pour mixture into a freezer container and freeze until mushy. In the meantime, beat the egg whites until very stiff. Pour into a bowl and beat until smooth. Fold in beaten egg whites, then put the whole mixture back into the freezer container and freeze until hard.

Mmmm, cold sweetened citrus. Alas, I have no ice cream maker (although I got a little ice-shaver after making halo halo for Jared's 50th Birthday Luau).

I do agree, though - grapefruit zest has little to recommend it.
